What is Plantable Paper?
Plantable paper is a biodegradable, seed-infused paper that can be printed on, used, gifted, and then planted to grow real wildflowers. It’s increasingly popular among environmentally conscious businesses, event planners, and individuals seeking sustainable alternatives to traditional paper printing.
Typical uses include:
- Wedding invitations
- Business cards
- Thank-you cards
- Product inserts and packaging slips
- Promotional materials for eco-led brands
We are very proud of our seeded paper range, which we introduced back in 2018, and it has really blossomed! In this guide, we explain how plantable paper works, the best printing methods, and how to use it effectively.
How Does Plantable Paper Work?
Plantable paper is usually made from post-consumer recycled fibres mixed with wildflower seeds. Once planted under a thin layer of soil, the paper pulp naturally decomposes, and the seeds begin to germinate.
Seed Types Commonly Used
- Native UK wildflower blends
- Pollinator-friendly mixes (great for bees and butterflies)
- Herb seed mixes
- Custom seed blends for branded campaigns

How to Plant Seeded Paper
Now for the really fun part of planting your seeded paper and watching it grow. Go grab a planting pot, some soil, a watering can and most importantly, your seeded product, and follow this quick step-by-step guide to learn how.
- Grab your pot and fill it three-quarters of the way with soil. *top tip – ensure your planting pot has a drainage hole.
- Soak your seeded paper in room temperature water, place it into your pot and cover with a thin coating of soil. * top tip – the seeded paper will only need a quick soaking; we don’t want to make papier-mâché.
- Now, place in a nice warm sunny spot, water your paper daily for the first week until your seedlings start to appear. It is very important for the paper not to dry out, as this will stop the germination of the seedlings. *top tip – keep the soil moist, make sure it does not dry out or become waterlogged.
- Now sit back and watch your seedlings grow into a mini garden, and don’t forget to water regularly.
